The Royal Award for Modern Painting
Established in 1871, the Royal Award for Modern Painting is one of the Netherlands’ oldest and most esteemed art prizes. It has evolved into a tradition of royal recognition for painters under the age of 35. Today, the award is presented by King Willem-Alexander at the Royal Palace Amsterdam. Each year, fifteen nominees are selected from hundreds of entries, of which three artists are awarded the title winner of the Royal Award for Modern painting. From October 12 to November 10, 2024, the winning and nominated works were displayed at the Royal Palace. This exhibition at Hama Gallery is an extension of that, offering an intimate and broad insight into Faria van Creij-Callender’s creative journey.
Faria van Creij-Callender
Faria’s work is an evocative exploration of identity and personal experiences. Growing up within a blend of cultural influences, her art reflects the nuance and complexity of life’s in-between spaces. Her technique seamlessly combines the classical with the contemporary, weaving historical painting techniques with modern identity. Faria’s artworks are infused with introspection, drawing inspiration from everyday encounters and transforming ordinary moments into imaginative landscapes. During her studies at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague, Faria refined a unique approach that places emphasis on contrast —light and shadow, clarity and ambiguity— often using herself as the subject to delve into themes of self-reflection and identity. Congratulations! offers an ongoing exploration into Faria’s view on the world.
